The Progress of a Painting

Posted on

Here is a progress of a painting I did recently. I took pictures not with the intention to share, but I wanted to see how it developed. Sometimes I don’t know if the outcome will be success, and it is nice to go back and maybe resurrect what was lost, if I needed it. I really liked the original sketch, which I followed from a photograph. I wanted her to have somewhat mystical background, and that is all I wanted to be attached to. Everything else had to still emerge. So here are the steps.

After the sketch I filled it with gesso. The gessoed sketch is very useful for a value study, just to see where the darkest of darks are and the lightest of lights, and then the ones that fall in between. I added a hand, first I thought she would be holding something, but then, I really like to add hands to paintings, I think they add to the story. I think she was going to point to something.

The I started to add color, I was not sure about the color palate yet, but I knew it was going to evolve as well. In the middle of it I took a black and white picture, again to see, how the value was developing.

And here she is, she turned out to be the Cosmic Girl. She will be available for sale at our next auction at the Heartful Soul Artists Collective – The Angels and Saints. You can join us here on December 1st – Angels And Saints online Auction December 1st -2nd.
